Dry Needling

Physical Therapy Brownsville Port Isabel Olmito Laguna Vista Los Fresnos South Padre Island

Dry Needling is a technique used by physical therapists in the states that allow the practice. It is commonly utilized in our Olmito office to stimulate muscles and to treat pain. The licensed physical therapist inserts a “dry” needle, free from any medication or infection, to the targeted muscle of the body.

Dry needling is supported by research and modern Western medicine, unlike acupuncture which is based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by an acupuncturist. Dry needling is often described as: Intramuscular manual therapy or Trigger point dry needling.

What is a Trigger Point?

A trigger point is a tight strand of muscle that feels like a cord or tendon that is located within a larger muscle group. If the tendon is tender or injured, it may refer to pain in other parts of the body when pressure is applied.

What kind of needles are used?

Physical Therapists insert a thin thread-like needle into the body to reach the trigger points and stimulate the connective tissues.

Physical Therapists use sterile needles and wear PPE as well as gloves when dry needling. All needles are disposed of in a medical sharps collector.

Why Consider Dry Needling?

Dry needling is often introduced by the Physical therapist well into a treatment plan.

Dry needling will help target the muscles that are deep within the body that regular movement can not target. It’ll help stimulate the trigger points, that help reduce muscle tension and pain, and ultimately help speed up recovery.

If you are interested in the benefits of dry needling, we highly recommend you consider scheduling a consultation with our team. Our highly-trained physical therapists would be happy to discuss how dry needling might help you with your specific health goals.
