Headaches & Migraines

Physical Therapy Cameron County Surge Mobile Physical Therapy Neck Pain Relief

Pain that occurs on any part of the head is called a Headache. Most headaches are harmless and oftentimes they go away on their own. There are several different categories of headaches that the International Headache Society describe:

  • Migraine and cluster
  • Cervicogenic (also known as muscle spasm headaches)
  • Cranial neuralgias, pain in different parts of the facial area
  • Secondary headaches that occur from other conditions such as infections or fevers or in rare cases tumors or more serious illnesses.

Physical Therapists in Port Isabel and Olmito can help you determine the type of headaches you may suffer from and if harmless, they can help you manage them through hands-on patient care.

What are Headaches?

Headaches are just as common as back pain, and just as equally as frustrating to manage. The most common category of headaches experienced is the Muscle Spasm Headaches. These can be caused by stress, poor posture, jaw or neck problems or even fatigue.

When there is tension or an injury near the head, neck or jaw area, an increase in pressure on the nerves may occur. When muscles are overworked due to bad posture or an injury, the increased pressure on the nerves may also cause a headache.

How does a Headache feel?

The most common headaches are described as starting at the back of the head that eventually spreads to the top of the head and the eyes. You might feel throbbing in one area that feels like it spreads to the back of the head. The headache is often described as tightness similar to wearing a tight hat or as if your hair was being pulled. Stress can often make the headaches worsen.

How Can a Physical Therapist Help?

Once you meet with your Physical Therapist, they will conduct a thorough exam to help determine the causes of your headaches. It is important to be as detailed with your health history to help the Physical Therapist understand causes, triggers, and possible injuries that initially caused the headaches. In addition to your history, your physical therapist will have you perform a few activities to have a better understanding of your muscle and joint mobility in different settings and activities.

After determining the type of headaches that you suffer from, your physical therapist will create a care plan for you to help improve your lifestyle and manage your headaches. If it is determined that you suffer from a more serious headache, then they may refer you to seek a healthcare provider for additional treatment.
